Chandigarh to Shimla: the route

The drive to Shimla follows the historic Kalka–Shimla highway (NH-5). You leave the plains at Zirakpur, reach Kalka, and then begin the climb through Parwanoo, Solan and Kandaghat before arriving in Shimla.

Worthwhile stops along the way:

Tip: Want it pre-planned? Our Chandigarh–Shimla tour covers the drive plus Shimla sightseeing, and the Chandigarh–Shimla–Manali package links both hill stations in one trip.

Chandigarh to Manali: the route

The Manali drive is longer and runs on NH-3: Chandigarh – Ropar – Bilaspur – Sundernagar – Mandi – Kullu – Manali. The first half crosses gentle hills and the Bilaspur reservoir; the real magic begins after Mandi, where the road hugs the Beas River through the Kullu Valley.

Can you combine Shimla and Manali in one trip?

Absolutely — and it's the most popular way to see Himachal. A typical loop is Chandigarh → Shimla → Manali → Chandigarh over 5–6 days, with the scenic Shimla–Manali leg passing through Mandi. You get the colonial charm of Shimla, the snow and adventure of Manali, and a continuous mountain drive in between.

Best time to make the drive

March–June and the post-monsoon weeks of October give the smoothest, clearest drives. In the winter snow season the routes remain open but can be slow after fresh snowfall, while the monsoon (July–mid September) brings a real risk of landslides on the Chandigarh–Manali highway — start early and keep your plans flexible. Cab vs self-drive: which is better?

Self-driving is possible, but Himachal's hill roads — blind curves, narrow stretches, heavy holiday traffic and changing weather — make a cab with an experienced local driver the easier and safer choice, especially on your first trip. You skip the parking and navigation stress, actually enjoy the scenery, and your driver knows the current road conditions and the best places to stop.
